Abstract

Histamine is the main chemical mediator produced by the mast cell activated in response to immunological
and non-immunological stimuli that is involved in the production of symptoms of bronchospasms, rhinitis,
urticaria, and anaphylaxis. H1 antihistamines are drugs widely indicated by pediatricians and clinicians in
their medical practice for more than 50 years. The development of second generation anti-H1 and its
metabolites have contributed to its more effective use and high therapeutic safety.
This article aims to review the most relevant pharmacology and clinical indications in order to contribute
to the appropriate and rational indication of H1-antihistamines.
