Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic retreatment is a non-surgical procedure that involves the removal of filling
material from the dental canal. The hypothesis of the present study establishes that the use of the Fanta R3
instrument (25.06) and the Clearsonic R1 tip will help reduce the amount of filling material remaining in
the mesiobuccal canal of mandibular molars.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the Clear Sonic ultrasonic tip and Fanta file in the unblocking of
root canals previously filled with 2 different sealants. Specific objectives: 1) To compare the removal of
filling material from mesiobuccal canals of mandibular molars previously filled with AHPlus and Bio C
Sealer. 2) Evaluate the remaining filling material in the 3 thirds of the root canal, after using the Clear Sonic
tip and the FANTA file.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 20 distal lower molar canals previously filled with 2 different sealants
were selected, which were divided into 2 experimental groups of 10 teeth each (n = 10). Digital radiographs
of the simples were taken in the proximal and orthoradial directions. An R1 Clear Sonic arrow-shaped
ultrasonic tip mounted on a P4 Ultrasonic Scaler (BAOLAI) ultrasound equipment was used, the instrument
was activated for 3 cycles of 20 seconds making a pecking movement in and out in order to remove the
filling material. Between each cycle the instrument was removed and cleaned. The FANTA file (AF Blue
R3) was used in the coronary, middle and apical third. In this last third up to the working length, making
entry and exit movements. The data will be collected on a data capture sheet and the Mann Whitney test
was performed.
RESULTS: When applying the Mann Whitney test, the removal of the filling material, did not reveal
significant differences between both sealants (AH PLUS and BIO- C Sealer). It is observed that the amount
and location of the remaining material, both in the coronal third, as well as in the middle and apical third
of the mesiobuccal canal of lower molars, was the same with both sealants.
CONCLUSIONS: both the use of the clear sonic tip and the reciprocating Fanta files helped in the removal
of filling material, however, they did not completely eliminate it. The amount of the filling material
remaining in the three thirds was similar in both groups, regardless of the sealant used.
