Abstract

Issues associated with childbirth can be preventable, especially in dogs with anatomical problems related
to the size of the birth canal. Generally, this affects the development of the fetus prior to the birthing period
and during the imminent delivery. Fetal distress is a consequence that occurs at the onset of labor. While it
helps to finalize the development of the fetus and prepare them for birth, prolonged periods of fetal distress
can be detrimental.
The gestational process, from detecting estrus to giving birth, involves a series of actions that should be
monitored by a veterinarian with the appropriate knowledge to facilitate the transfer of information
regarding the circumstances of each case. This is particularly important in brachycephalic breeds, as they
tend to have a high percentage of dystocia-related problems.
